One of the goals of the customs policy under Donald Trump: German car manufacturers are to produce almost entirely in the USA. This is unlikely to change even in the discussions between Merz and Trump<\/a>. So if we have to make commitments anyway \u2013 why not bring software development to Germany?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it were up to Trump, the products sold in the USA should also be produced there, in order to create jobs and bring skills, for example in car manufacturing, to the USA. Because those who build cars must also know how to build them. It is not to be expected that this attitude will change if there is supposed to be a strategy behind the confusing political quick shots. In the end, Trump could achieve exactly what he wanted from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Germany and Europe? We would come out of the whole story empty-handed. While we would no longer have tariffs, which has a short- to medium-term advantage, in the long term, the competence in car manufacturing would increasingly lie in the USA. Employees could resign and also switch to American manufacturers, which would give the USA a significant advantage here. In the end, we might not only buy American software but also American cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why aren't we countering this? In Europe, and especially in Germany, there are many capable software manufacturers that are known and used worldwide. This includes not only Nextcloud as an open-source collaboration platform but also the project management solution OpenProject (which, by the way, is more powerful than Microsoft Project Online) and Univention as a platform provider. All these companies are very small compared to Microsoft because they have to grow independently against overwhelming forces, but they are doing it nonetheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the interest of independence from the USA and strengthening competencies in our own country, it would be a good step to link concessions, for example in car manufacturing, to conditions such as protectionism in software imports. This not only strengthens the domestic economy<\/a>, but would also make Europe more independent. Especially in future technologies like AI, we could position ourselves much better with the competencies in our own country and develop our own solutions, provided we spend more money on domestic players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now would be the time to position ourselves against the USA and not just accept Trump's conditions to avoid tariffs. A first step has already been taken \u2013 the IT Planning Council has declared the Open Document Format as the standard for public administration starting in 2027<\/a>.
